In June of 2003, Tim Barsky had the idea to put together a beatbox showcase in San Francisco and call it "Vowel Movement". Because he didn't know many beatboxers at the time, he linked up with his good friend and fellow beatboxer, Bryan Neuberg (a.k.a. Process) to assist with the scouting of performers for the first show. Working together on this new concept, Tim and Bryan were planting the seed for a movement which would come to influence beatboxers and musicians around the world.
The first show took place at the Exit Theatre Cafe on Eddy Street, and included performances b Tim Barsky, Bryan Neuberg, Kid Beyond, Eachbox, Vocal Wax, The Schmaltzen Drops, I.O., One Mouth Band, and Paul Rodriguez. It was a huge success, with a great turnout and a strong sense of community among the beatboxers. Riding this momentum, The Vowel Movement turned into a monthly event ... and the rest is history.
Now, having been running for over five years, The Vowel Movement has become more than just a monthly beatbox event – it has helped establish and boost beatboxers' careers, created many friendships, and most important of all, it's created a supportive community. We are all about bringing new faces on board and letting those who want to be heard, get heard. Our show has been featured on television, been promoted through the radio, and has gotten a great amount of press coverage.
In the summer of 2005, The Vowel Movement put together its first ever Beatbox Gym, which included workshops, jam sessions, one-on-one lessons, and a great cookout. From mastering breath control to live looping, the Gym had plenty of opporunities to connect with and learn from other beat boxers.
Now managed and produced by Everyday Theatre (www.everydaytheatre.org), The Vowel Movement produces regular bi-monthly showcases, books out beatboxers for events and parties, produces the annual West Coast Open Beatboxing Championships, and is working on getting beatboxers into the recording studio.
