Dreaming in a Firestorm

Dreaming in a FirestormThe fairy-tale story of a musician walking home from a gig through a San Francisco that is part dream and part disaster, "Dreaming" weaves together interconnected oral histories centering on the experience of trying to hope inside something that's on fire, and seeking a happy ending against all odds.

Drawn from interviews with Bay Area performers, paramedics, teachers, and firefighters, the show combines beatbox, a live soundtrack, hip-hop theatre, juggling, and traditional Jewish folklore.  The lead show for EDT's 2006-7 season, "Dreaming" was devised and produced as both a roots-tradition solo show for June and July 2006, and in a full ensemble staging for early 2007 (featuring the musicians of The Bright River- Jess Ivry, Tommy Sheperd, and Safa Shokrai).
"Affecting and wise ... inspired stuff, howlingly funny." - East Bay Express (full story)

"[Barsky] constructs this play by grafting two disparate traditions, traveling Jewish theater and hip-hop, into a cohesive whole." - San Francisco Chronicle (full story)

"[A] warmhearted, multidexterous solo performance.... The show's haunting, densely textured beat-box and flute codas keep us traveling along." -Chloe Veltman, SF Weekly

MIXTAPE

MIXTAPEEveryday Theatre presents a showcase of new performances and works-in-progress by members of our Ensemble. We call it MIXTAPE.

In MIXTAPE, we share an intimate space with you to premiere some rough cuts in development, as well as revisiting some old favorites from our repertoire. We throw down some solo work, and we mix it up together, too -- a little hip-hop, a little theatre, and a few surprises. Afterwards, we mix it up with you, talkback with the artists, share ideas with each other, and, hopefully, dissolve some of the traditional boundaries between performer and audience. We hope you'll join us for these unique nights of beats, rhymes, and community.

Second Saturdays at 8:30pm, beginning in March 11, 2006, at Epic Arts Studios, Berkeley (map).

As If In Sleep

As if in Sleep is a one-man theatre piece conceived and performed by Tim Barsky and directed by Jeff Raz. A wonder tale told in the traditional style, the show combined traditional Jewish narratives with an oral history of three years spent on the line as a public health worker with at-risk youth. during the West Coast premiere, Tim worked closely with director Jeff Raz, and designer Heather Basarab to create a one man show which was called, "The most teeming, inventive, and good spirited production in this city," by SF Weekly.

As if Sleep was first performed as part of an artists-residency at AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 31rst, 1998. It premiered in the United Kingdom at London’s Finborough Theatre in January of 2002. The show then premiered on the West Coast at The Exit Theatre in San Francisco, in October and November of 2002, where it was presented by The Hub, a program established by the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco to present theatre, music and spoken word events that explore the evolution of Jewish culture.
